To the clans of highland Dwarves of Hodrsgard, family is all-important. Duty to the clan comes before even king and country under most circumstances. During his childhood, Kilgane did not share this view, ignoring his duties to sate his thirst for adventure. His family grew ashamed of his antics and soon severed all ties with him. Kilgane initially rejoiced at his new liberty, and left to become a mercenary fighter. He accumulated wealth and fame using his skill with throwing hammers, but after three decades of fighting, Kilgane realized the ramifications of leaving the clan. Fellow Dwarves recognized him as an outcast, and he felt severed from his race entirely. Kilgane started thinking of a way that he could make amends to regain his lost family. The Master's games appeared to him as a chance to regain the respect of his kin, and he petitioned the Emperor Ragnus Ironmantle to represent the Dwarves at the games. Despite his disgrace, Kilgane's combat record could not be denied, and the Emperor approved his will to fight.
